Queensland Cotton to execute first-ever cotton export through Darwin Port
Darwin, Australia - Queensland Cotton (QC), a key player in Australia's cotton industry for over 100 years, and a subsidiary of Olam Agri, a market leading food, feed, and fibre agri-business, has collaborated with WANT Cotton Gin in Katherine for the first export of cotton in containers through Darwin Port.
This will support the industry in the Northern Territory of Australia with an alternative, more cost-effective export pathway.
I am thrilled that we could come together to help shape a new supply chain option for the Northern Territory. We are grateful for the enthusiastic support from local stakeholders including growers, supply chain providers, Darwin Port, and the WANT Cotton Gin. Looking ahead, we will continue to seek ways to enhance the efficiency of the supply chain.
Meg Strahle,
Vice President of Cotton Lint Trading, Olam Agri in Australia
Previously, cotton bales that were ginned at the WANT Cotton Gin were routed back 3,000km to Queensland and exported through the Port of Brisbane. There is a potential to unlock savings of up to 12,000 truck travel hours, lower fuel expenses and reduce the environmental impact if all cotton from Northern Territory and Western Australia ends up being exported this way.
This remarkable collaboration demonstrates how our culture supports innovation at speed. We provide our team the freedom to transform - to rise to the challenge, take ownership of decisions, and explore new ways of doing things. The packing of containers and delivery of the first shipment through Port Darwin achieved in just two weeks, is testament to this.
Ashish Govil,
Managing Director of Olam Agri in Australia
In line with its purpose to transform food, feed, and fibre for a more sustainable future, this milestone achievement not only has potential to streamline the cotton supply chain in the region, but also highlights Olam Agri’s commitment to creating positive change for regional communities, the environment, and the broader cotton industry.
