Launching Biochar Production in Côte d’Ivoire to Boost Climate Resilience

Sustainability

Diawala, Côte d’Ivoire - Olam Agri, in partnership with the International Labour Organization (ILO) and with the support of the Government of Japan, marked a significant milestone with the launch of local biochar production.

Converting Cotton Waste into Climate Solutions

As part of this initiative, 24 pieces of equipment — including tricycles, wheelbarrows, carbonisers (improved kilns), rakes, machetes, and protective gear — were handed over to farming communities. Combined with training, these tools enable farmers to transform cotton stalks into biochar, improving soil fertility and boosting yields, creating decent jobs for young people, women, and refugees, and strengthening climate resilience while driving inclusive growth in the Tchologo region.

This project highlights how innovation, global partnerships and local empowerment come together to make agriculture more sustainable. By turning agricultural residues into opportunities, we are not only improving livelihoods for farmers in Côte d’Ivoire but also advancing Olam Agri’s purpose of transforming food, feed, and fibre for a sustainable future.
