Heart & Mind: Driving Safer Futures
Every day, nearly 1,400 Olam Agri trucks set out across Nigeria, carrying more than just products - the livelihoods of families, the trust of customers, and the responsibility for everyone’s safe return.
At Olam Agri, safety is not just a policy. It is very personal. Operating one of Nigeria’s largest fleets across the country means navigating complex terrain and challenging road conditions. The team has built a strong zero-harm culture - installing a driving simulator lab for training and equipping each truck with GPS tracking and AI-powered safety cameras.
But technology alone wasn’t enough. Despite these systems, about 10% of drivers still showed high-risk behaviour on the road. Instead of opting for stricter penalties or incentives, the team asked: What truly motivates safe driving?
Safety That Speaks to the Heart
The initiative became a bridge for human connection. The team visited families of drivers with safety violations - not to reprimand, but to share data and invite loved ones to encourage safer habits. At the same time, something powerful happened. Families of safe drivers were also visited, but to celebrate. Recognition happened in their homes and communities -drivers were honoured in front of their loved ones.
The pride was palpable. The emotion was real.
Drivers who experienced this recognition didn’t just want to remain compliant - they wanted to remain role models for their kids and society. That began in July 2023 with visits to just 10 families has now grown to over 550 families reached across Nigeria, with more added each month despite the logistical challenges of reaching remote communities.
Driving Safety, Building Futures
The response was overwhelming. Over 100 families have benefited. Today, their children are pursuing degrees in health and medical fields, engineering, and mass communication, to name a few - proof that safe driving can shape generations.
The transformation is clear: High-risk driver rates dropped from 10% to under 2%.
For Mr Nitin Mehta, Managing Director, Olam Agri’s Wheat Milling Business in Nigeria, the results speak volumes: “The success within our Fleet Business gives us a competitive edge and strengthens our foundation for growth. With a fleet of this size - and ambitions to expand - we must go beyond traditional safety measures. Safety must live in the hearts of our drivers.”
Through the Crown Flour Angels vocational programme, adult women in high-rated drivers’ families now receive training in baking and pastry-making, strengthening household incomes and creating new opportunities. So far, more than 50 women have been trained.
More Than a Safety Programme
The Heart and Mind Initiative has shown that when safety is driven by emotion, pride and purpose - not fear - behaviour truly changes. Now, every safe journey carries deeper meaning: a child’s education, a mother’s skill, a family’s pride.
In the end, this is about more than transportation. It's about families, futures, and a promise kept for a brighter, safer future.
Every journey is a pledge: return home safely - every single day.
